Unlocking the Potential of Generative Design and Additive Manufacturing

Projects have a competing series of constraints that continue to tighten around the project. Can the project be more complex, can the project be designed faster, can the project be cheaper, etc? These ever-tightening constraints are creating large challenges across our industry that traditional project execution methods struggle to meet. To address this shift, the industry is recognizing the need for enhanced design and the strategic use of technology to unleash structural engineering's potential. This presentation will explore leveraging tools like generative design and additive manufacturing to do just that to change the way projects can be tackled.

This presentation will delve into four case study projects to demonstrate the practical application of these technologies on a large scale. The projects include the restoration of the Space Shuttle Pathfinder at the US Space & Rocket Center, the renovation of Altar’d States flagship store in Columbus, OH, Cladding the 300 Nevins Building in Brooklyn, NY, and a confidential art installation. The discussion will cover the following technologies and methodologies:

  • Designing with unconventional materials (lexan, urethane foam, testing, fastening, etc.)
  • Generative design and optimization using AI
  • Additive manufacturing and 3D printing on a building scale.

Our presenter: Rick Wheeler, PE, KPFF

Rick is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and an Associate of KPFF in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He is a dynamic and driven professional passionate about connecting with creative individuals in the building industry. With extensive experience in complex engineering and a knack for building relationships with strategic partners, Rick executes their vision precisely. He believes that structures are not just functional entities, but also works of art that can positively impact our communities. As a lifelong learner, Rick constantly seeks opportunities to hone his design skills and pursue excellence in every project. His dedication, ability to connect with like-minded professionals and commitment to community impact make him a valuable asset to our team. His passion, creativity, and thirst for knowledge will propel him to greater heights as a leader and professional in engineering.
