ASIC 360-16 Changes for Connections  and

Fabrications Economy: What Fabricators Wish Engineers Knew

In AISC 360-16 Chapter K is now titled “Additional Requirements for HSS and Box-Section Connections,” indicating these requirements are in addition to Chapter J. Other highlights of the recent update:

• A “new” limit of applicability pertaining to the ends of members. For connections close to the member end, the allowable resistance equations may not apply.

• The effective width variables (like B_b and B_p) have been combined into one common variable.

• The code remains largely unchanged for round members, .

• The shear tab equation has been moved out of the Specification and into Part 10 of the 15th Edition Steel Construction Manual.

The presentation will provide an overview of these and other changes related to HSS connection design in the latest AISC steel specification.

There is a common misconception that structures using hollow structural sections (HSS) are more expensive than those comprised primarily of open sections even though HSS sections are often more geometrically economical - mainly due to the difference in cost on a unit weight basis.

HSS member design and connections have a significant influence on the total fabricated cost. Kim will share the Steel Tube Institute findings from surveys and focus groups with fabricators to learn how to reduce the cost of HSS connections. Attendees will learn which details work (and which don't); what you need to know about HSS in AESS applications; tolerances and how to detail for them; and relative costs of HSS fabrication.

The presentation will provide information useful to any structural engineer designing with HSS sections.
