Cantilever Moment Connections through W-Shaped and HSS Columns  (1.5 PDH)

Structures often include minor and major cantilevered beam to W-Shaped and HSS column moment connections.   This presentation will focus on the methods used for checking all pertinent AISC limit states in W-Shaped and HSS columns under the influence of forces induced by the cantilever and backup beams.  The various responsibilities of the EOR and the steel fabricator's connection design PE, as specified under current and pending versions of the AISC Code of Standard Practice and the IBC, will also be discussed. Case studies will be used to illustrate various design options.

Bill Merell's 51 year career as a structural engineer includes the design of transmission towers and fossil and nuclear power plants.  Since 1990 Bill has designed connections for all types of steel structures including stadiums, arenas, hospitals, convention centers, art museums, court houses, low and mid-rise buildings and storage facilities.  He has also provided expert witness services on major league baseball facilities and large convention centers.
