Quality Bolting and Facade Inspections  (2.0 PDH)

Presentation 1:
Quality Bolting Seminar (1.0 PDH)

by Paul C. Seewald, Innovative Manufacturing Engineering

The presentation reviews the basic requirements for ensuring bolt tension and the technologies used to achieve bolt tension.

Engineering Load Cell (ELC) Technologies incorporated the standard Direct Tension Indicator (DTI) with a bolt for a product called the DBA (DTI/Bolt Assembly) and with a nut for a product called DNA (DTI/Nut Assembly). These unique products are revolutionizing the fastener industry and the way things are bolted together. Not only are these new to the market, but most of all are user friendly and reduce installation errors.

Presentation 2:
Facade Inspection Ordinance and Inspection Technology (1.0 PDH)

by Mark Churpek, Cleveland Unit Manager and David Cheyne, Senior Associate - Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.

The City of Cleveland passed Ordinance Number 1533-15, effective on June 6, 2016, making Cleveland the tenth city in the country to enact a facade ordinance. It requires the periodic inspection of certain building facades to help ensure public safety.

.

This presentation will discuss topics related to the Cleveland Facade Ordinance including:

  • The history of various facade ordinances
  • Inspection requirements and buildings included in this Ordinance
  • Access considerations for various types of facades, including ground only, ladders, scaffolding, swing states, rappelling, and drones
  • Identification of “Unsafe Conditions” on building facades
  • Short and long-term mitigation alternatives

The presentation will also cover the use of drones for assessments of buildings and civil infrastructure. Capabilities, limitations, and governmental regulations will be discussed.
