Improving the Performance of Wood-Framed Structures in a Tornado  (1.0 PDH, 0.1 CEU)

Shortly after tornados struck Joplin, Missouri and Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2011, research teams began investigating and documenting the damage. Their observations, conclusions, and recommendations are summarized in FEMA P-908. This document identifies key structural elements that failed during these extreme wind events and suggests changes to the building codes and construction practices to strengthen them. This presentation will review these weak elements and present details and methods to mitigate damage.
