Wind Engineering and Wind Tunnel Testing of Structures  (1.0 PDH)

The Structural Engineers Association of Ohio is pleased to welcome Svend Ole Hansen of SOH Wind Engineering to share his expertise in wind engineering and wind tunnel testing. Discussion will include presentation of case studies, comparison of wind tunnel testing results with design loads obtained through typical code-based calculations and information on mitigating vibrations of structures by aerodynamic modifications and damping. We look forward to hosting this intriguing exploration of the real effects of wind loading on structures. Join us!

Presenter:
Svend Ole Hansen, Ph.D., SOH Wind Engineering, LLC

Education: The Technical University of Denmark, Ph.D. in Wind Engineering, 1978; M.Sc. in Civil and Structural Engineering, 1975.

Background: Since founding Svend Ole Hansen ApS in 1988 in Denmark and SOH Wind engineering in 2011 in Vermont, Svend Ole Hansen has served as a consultant on various wind engineering aspects of cable supported long span bridges and other structures: the George Washington Bridge in New York, the Forth Replacement Crossing in UK, the Messina Bridge in Italy, the Carquinez Bridge in California, the Hardanger Bridge in Norway, new grandstands of the Københavns Idrætspark (Copenhagen Stadium), and The Bella Hotel in Denmark among others. His experience includes theoretical calculations, wind tunnel tests, structural vibrations, wind-induced traffic accidents on bridges and estimation of extreme winds, with specialized knowledge concerning the interpretation of wind tunnel test results and their application in the design of cable supported long span bridges and other structures.

Svend Ole Hansen has served as an expert witness in his field and has been a lecturer in wind engineering at the Technical University of Denmark for more than 10 years. His presentation venues include the Scruton Lecture in 2009 and at the Structural Engineers World Congress in 2007 in India. He was appointed as an external professor at Syddansk University in 2013. SOH has written three books and a number of papers regarding different aspects of wind engineering. In 2010 Svend Ole was appointed Chairman of the European Project Team revising the Eurocodes on snow load, wind actions, and temperature actions. His contributions are included in Eurocodes, the Eurocode on wind actions and Danish codes.
