Improving the Performance of Wood-Framed Structures in a Tornado  (1.0 PDH)

David joined Simpson Strong-Tie in 2007. His primary role is providing technical support to twenty four (24) States throughout the Northeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. He is a 2004 graduate of Penn State with a B.S. in Agricultural & Biological Engineering, and a 2007 graduate of Virginia Tech with a M.S. in Civil Engineering with a focus in Structural Engineering. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ohio and Indiana, and is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Ohio.

Presentation Summary:

Shortly after tornadoes struck Joplin, Missouri and Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2011, research teams began investigating and documenting the damage. Their observations, conclusions, and recommendations are summarized in FEMA P-908. This document identifies key structural elements that failed during these extreme wind events and suggests changes to the building codes and construction practices to strengthen them. This presentation will review these weak elements and present details and methods to mitigate damage.
