High-Performance Steel Connection Requirements and Everyday Applications (1.5 PDH)

January marked the 22^nd anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake that struck southern California.  Concrete bridges and buildings collapsed, and there were widespread steel connection failures.  Northridge exposed flaws in structural design and construction practices, resulting in major changes to the industry and to building codes.  One major change was a requirement for qualifications of seismic connections through full-scale physical testing.  This led to testing programs for other high-performance considerations as well, including blast and progressive collapse.

The presentation will also discuss the impact of moment connection selection on lateral system behavior, how the SidePlate connection was developed to directly solve pre-Northridge issues, and how SidePlate connections have since evolved to save money on projects with no seismic considerations at all.
